My work revels in the contradictions of navigating intimacy in contemporary gay life. My current research uses both archival histories and the ephemeral histories of personal experience to examine how cruising – the queer practice of finding casual sex in public spaces – has shifted in the context of digital life. Looking at the network of interactions facilitated by the semi-public space of Grindr, Scruff and other location-based hook up apps, my interdisciplinary practice interrogates the role these apps play in structuring and mediating relationships within the queer community in ways that are simultaneously empowering and alienating.
Theo Vasiloudes (b.1998) is an American-Cypriot artist based in London. His work navigates the intricate dance of identity, intimacy and visibility within contemporary gay male culture.
After graduating in 2023 from the Royal College of Art with an MA in Contemporary Art Practice, Theo has gone on to work with underground queer artists’ collectives throughout the UK including Stoggaf Co. (London) and Obscene Pomegranate (Lincoln). His work has been shown at group shows, most recently at Does Anything Else Under Heaven Really Matter? curated by Will Coups at D-Contemporary in London, and his work has been shortlisted for the Bloomberg New Contemporaries award in both 2023 and 2024.
Since April of 2024, Theo has been working with UK New Artists as part of their New Artists Collective in Derby, England. Working collaboratively with other artists, he produced a body of work responding to Derby’s industrial past that was presented in October 2024 as part of a weekend-long celebration of the arts in Derby. Theo will be returning to Derby in February 2025 with UK New Artists to lead a residency centering around the Language of Objects.
